Tutorial — Crayon Wallet

The girls are really enjoying their crayon wallets, and here they are drawing with them when we went to visit Mark to have lunch at his office the other day. We’ve been taking them with us on car trips, or any time we are waiting at a restaurant or doctor’s office.

Here’s how to make a crayon wallet of your own (or for a fabulous gift!):
Begin with a 9″ x 12″ piece of felt and cut exactly in half as shown. Place a 24″ piece of ribbon along the center and pin in place.
Sew along both edges of the ribbon with a zig zag stitch.
Next, cut out a piece of felt 3 1/2 ” by 6″ and pin as shown. I leave a little room on the one edge to allow for stretching.
Begin at the center and sew straight to the edge. Sew along the three outer edges and then sew two more seams in the middle to make four pockets for the crayons.
Next, cut a 2 1/2″ by 3 1/2″ piece of felt and pin on the other side of the wallet as shown. Sew this as you would a pocket for the memo pad. I found memo pads for $0.25 at a party store and they worked beautifully.
Fill with crayons and your memo pad, and you’re done!
Enjoy!

  1. Valerie, finally made the switch over to using Firefox and now I can visit you again, ya! Was having serious problems with IE.

Love this idea and how it's very simple using felt that won't fray and straight stitches that even I can managed on my machine. Thanks for the tute!

Great idea! What a lovely tutorial. Thanks. This one is definitely in my link roundup this week.

  4. @ Katie — I never use IE, and sorry to hear it was giving you such trouble, but I'm so happy to see you back here again! Felt is very easy to work with, and also quite inexpensive. I love it!

@ Sherry — This is the perfect sewing project for beginners. The machine can be intimidating at first, but it is soooo worth it to try and learn!

@ mum space — Thank you so much! I would love to see what other links you include. There are so many good ideas out there!

I found your blog yesterday and put it on my blogroll. It's so interesting!
I love all the things you make.
Thank you so much for sharing your ideas.

This reminds me of a similar craft I made to hold my knitting needles. I used cow fur fabric on the outside and pink flannel (felt would've worked fine too probably) on the inside and called it my "needle udder." The flap that opened up was a semi-circle and kind of looked like an udder. πŸ™‚

  9. that's fantastic!

    These are so great.

  11. I have been wanting to make a crayon roll with a paper pad FOREVER! Thank you so much for sharing how you did it, makes it sooo much easier for us!

    Blessings,

    Valerie

That is the clearest and simplest crayon roll/wallet tutorial i've seen. I may actually try it. You make it seem doable.

  13. @ Justin and Katie — Your "needle udder" sounds fabulous! Great idea to use something similar for knitting needles, and I might have to try something like that for mine too. Have you noticed how all the needle cases seem to be made with "old lady" fabric? I want something a little more chic…. Hmm….

@ Valerie — I would love to hear how yours turns out. This is such a simple project, and the girls really love them!

  14. @ Mama King — I'm sure your girls would love these!! Thanks for stopping by!

  15. I SO wish I could sew – these crayon wallets are FABULOUS! Might be an idea for a giveaway for "non-sewers" like me!!!

    Or, would you sell them?

I love that you used felt – no hemming! I'm looking for a pattern that I can use for colored pencils and found your site. Looks like some frugal family fun here! πŸ™‚
