Write to Grandma Kit

Emily loves writing letters to Grandma, so we put together a little letter writing kit to encourage this important task! This is a fun way to celebrate Grandparent’s Day (Sept. 13th). Somehow I had accumulated a tremendous amount of stationery over the years, and Emily enjoyed going through my collection to pick out cards and pretty paper for her kit. We added some crayons, stickers, and I pre-addressed all of the envelopes for her. Everything fit neatly inside an accordion style file folder.

I used some index cards to make up flash cards just for letter-writing with words like Dear, Grandma, how, love, miss, you, are, going, doing, day. This gives Emily extra spelling and handwriting practice, and she can piece together her letter with very little help from me.
She was so proud to write her letter to Grandma all by herself!

  1. Dear Valerie,

I could have informed you that you had more stationary than an office supply store. I think it breeds in the closet at night. Maybe you should do something with the piles of tiny notebooks you collect?

    Love,
    Mark

  2. This is a wonderful idea, and perfect for Grandparents' Day – thank you!

I have loads of stationary (and tiny notebooks) under my bed. And a spare accordian folder, too. Emma doesn't write words yet (other than her name), but she does love to send mail to her grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins.

Does Emily know how to read, or do you help her line up the cards to form sentences?

  3. Mark,
Women love buying stationery. It's just one of the things we do.

    Valerie,
I can't wait to see what you do with the tiny notebooks. I like the write to Grandma kit. My sister lives far away so we will have to put together a write to auntie kit.

  4. M would love this, she always wants to write to people. And I have lots of stationary (sorry Mark) that rarely gets used.

  5. The Activity Mom says

Great idea! This is so cute!

  6. That is the cutest kit! I would like one of those for my letter writing πŸ™‚

  7. What a fabulous idea! What kid wouldn't want to use this kit to write a letter?!

  8. I love this! My son is just learning small words but knows all his letters. I plan to put one of these together tomorrow for my son! Thanks!

  9. @ MaryAnne — Emily can read well, but needs to work on spelling. She lines up the cards and forms her own sentences. Each "letter" to grandma has about one sentence on it. It is great practice for her! You could start a letter writing kit for Emma to just send little doodles and have her write her name on them. That would be so cute!

  10. @ Christy — So true! I'm definitely guilty of splurging on small notebooks and stationery, and then I usually get even more stationery or little notebooks as gifts from friends. That's a lot of stationery and little notebooks! I'm so happy to have found another use for them. πŸ™‚

Big fat star on this one in my google reader – love it! Our relatives are spread out around the world, so we're always looking for ways to make them feel closer, and this will be great when he's a little older. He'd enjoy it now too, minus the writing.

  13. As always you have such wonderful ideas. Thanks.

  19. I have been thinking about this subject alot. It seems to take awhile to get letters out the door to Grandparents houses. I feel bad and guilty! Thanks SO much for this post!

  20. That is a cute idea. I used to do things like that for my oldest daughter when she was younger. She liked writing letters too. Now, FB and email have replaced a lot of that along with texting. πŸ™‚ I'll have to teach my younger children to write letters
