These beautiful snowflake ornaments (shown above) couldn’t have been easier to make! I love that the process was mess-free, very easy, and frugal. Plus, we have more ornaments to add to our tree that are not fragile!!
To make your own snowflake ornaments, you will need: white model magic, snowflake cookie cutters, a rolling pin, and some ribbon.
I like to purchase model magic in big tubs when I have a 40% off coupon for the craft store. You can print one out here, if there is a Michael’s craft store near you!! Or AC Moore has all Crayola merchandize as a Buy One Get One Free special this week!
Invite your child over to roll out the Model Magic. Keep rolling until you have a piece that is about 1/4″ thick.
Cut with cookie cutters!! (This was Emily’s favorite part!)
A straw does a great job of making a hole to thread the ribbon through.
Roll up any excess Model Magic, and repeat the process until all the Model Magic is used up.
One package will make several ornaments!
Allow to air dry, then thread with ribbon to hang on your tree. You could also write on these with markers and they could double as gift tags!!
We had a great time making these, and I cannot wait for Clara to wake up from her nap so she can join in the fun!

Dear Valerie,
Do you still have your Bedazzler™?
Love,
Mark

@ danita — Yikes!! How did that happen?
@ Mark — When you see what Emily did to your moccasins, you will know the answer to that question. We're going to start calling you "sparkle toes".

What a great project I think we'll do this with our boys next year!
December 9th, 2009 on 4:48 pm
How fun! I've been thinking of making reusable tags to go with the fabric wrapping bags I want to make after Christmas & hitting the clearances. :>) These are cute cute cute! (Seriously, don't you ever get tired of us heaping praise on you? Tee hee.)
PS – Mark, I laughed at your use of the TM on Bedazzler!

Hi Valerie
They are so sweet and I love how easy they are to make. A Christmas ornament or gift tag – how perfect is that? They certainly would be the perfect gift tags to add to the paper you and your girls made.

These are wonderful!
Such a great idea!

I've never bought the model magic, but the kids have used it at school. This is a great idea to try with them. Maybe next year (oh, boy, do I have to start planning for next year already?…)

Very nice! Do you happen to know if you can paint on Model Magic?
(I'm subscribed to any comment/replies, so I'll see your answer if you post it here. Thanks!)
December 9th, 2009 on 7:09 pm
oooh i'd paint them
December 9th, 2009 on 7:20 pm
You had me at "no mess"! Is there anything better than that?
December 9th, 2009 on 7:21 pm
@ Amy's Stocking Stuffers — Yes! After they have air-dried, you can paint them, or decorate with markers. They work so well!!
December 9th, 2009 on 8:00 pm
Ooooooo- you could also use other Model Magic colors and make other ornaments with different cookie cutters- looking forward to trying this out tomorrow!

Oh, now I wish I had bought this last week! I was thinking I didn't want just plain white, and I wasn't sure if my two year old would really be into it yet. I was considering buying it for him because he is allergic to the wheat in play-doh. He'd love doing this with it, though. Thank you for the great idea to use the 50% off coupon (I do the same for Joanne's but hadn't thought to get the model magic there).

Those are so cute. She did a great job. Thanks for showing us this.

@Mark & @Valerie: LOL… Can I see a picture of the moccasins?
I think I remember you talking about that model magic stuff before. I still haven't tried it. I need to get some and do a project or two. I think the kids would like that.

I love all your ideas! I have some Magic Model but need to get more!
December 10th, 2009 on 12:58 pm
that looks like great stuff. We can not buy it here but maybe I will add it to my list for our next trip to Oz.

What a fun idea – my daughter would LOVE this! You always have such fun ideas and perfect for this age group… I just love reading your blog!
I'll have to pick up some modeling clay soon!

These are beautiful and what a coincidence because we just made some ornaments too. Also, I feel a bit silly since I spelled Beets incorrectly on my blog when sharing my pickle Beets recipe. You didn't notice of course right?

These are so great. To be honest I totally forgot about model magic. I used it way back when it first came out with the kids to make jewelry holders/trays for Grandmas for Mother's day. We need to get some again. Thanks so much!

So cute! My kids love that stuff!

Valerie–
I've only recently discovered FFFblog, and I love it. I love, love, loooove it.
And this is the very first post I read–I don't remember how I stumbled upon it, but I'm glad I did.
I totally used this idea–I, too, forgot about Model Magic–and am posting about it tonight. Hope that's okay with you–I'm planning to link back.
Cheers, and happiest of holidays,
amy

We tried these tonight! Thank you for motivating me to finally buy Model Magic (I knew I'd be stocking up on it someday… play doh has wheat, so the whole allergy thing again). WOW, that stuff is awesome and beats playdoh any day. But, I don't know how you got your snowflakes to pop out of the cutters so nicely. Maybe I was making them too thin. I'll post on my blog sometime and link up — we did different shapes, handprints, etc. Lots of fun, and now I have something for him to play with painting all week. Thanks again.

I never used model magic but it probably cannot be cheaper than salt, flour, and water…
Finely grind salt makes nice glitter, too.
