We went fishing in our foyer this afternoon — it was so much fun!
I made up some fish out of pipe cleaners, attached a magnet to the end of the string on the fishing pole (a stick from our backyard), and we had an instant fishing game!
Merlin wanted to play too! For the World’s Laziest Cat, that is really saying something.
… and he managed to catch one too! (By laying on top of it.) Silly, lazy cat!

Dear Valerie,
Please make sure that Merlin doesn’t actually eat any of the fish. He’s not a fan of the vet.
Love,
Mark

Thanks so much, Deborah! I’m so happy you stopped by!

Great idea. It makes sense that the magnet will pick up the pipe cleaners, but I have never thought of it or seen anything using the two together. Brilliant!
August 3rd, 2010 on 12:45 am
Thanks, Christy! I love that Emily could make up the fish all by herself. The more she can do on her own, the better!

Are you “fishing” for a compliment- ’cause if you are, I just have to say, this is a WONDERFUL idea!

This is the best thing that has ever happened! How do you think of your ideas! Brilliant! I’m so tempted to wake my little girl up to go night fishing because I know she is going to love this game! Thanks for sharing!

You know – often I read your blog and think, “How come I’ve never thought of that?” You are incredible.

Move over children, there is a new star on the FFF blog. Such a simple idea. The fishing game, I mean.
July 31st, 2010 on 7:16 am
Great post. We have a similar fishing set with cardboard fish and a paperclip for the mouth. This seems far easier!!
August 3rd, 2010 on 12:48 am
It IS super-easy — it doesn’t even involve scissors!
July 31st, 2010 on 7:53 am
wow! that takes the cake! i’ve done this before with the paperclips, but why did i never think of using pipecleaners–got the metal built right in. der!

August 1st, 2010 on 8:32 am
so fun!! I think we will do this very soon!!
August 1st, 2010 on 10:36 am
fantastic. Fast, easy, cheap and when teaching I can see that the activity could be extended to sorting…and oh my goodness, it would be quiet too
August 3rd, 2010 on 12:50 am
Exactly!! Clara enjoys sorting the fish by color, and she is pretty good at catching them too. Both of them were fishing in the foyer this afternoon… it was a lot of fun!

We did this today but our pipe cleaners were a little too fluffy for the magnet to really grab on to. So I used twist ties and they worked perfectly, they’re just not as pretty. Our fishing pole is a chopstick.
Love this game!
August 3rd, 2010 on 12:52 am
Great work-around!!
August 1st, 2010 on 3:49 pm
I never thought about using pipe cleaners for this as well. My kids will go nuts when I show them this.
August 2nd, 2010 on 12:53 am
What a fun idea! I think my kids will love this. I will have to try it real soon!
August 9th, 2010 on 10:37 pm
