While I was doodling with the girls this afternoon, we made these fun peacock pictures inspired by a recent trip to the zoo! Emily was proud to be able to do this without any help from me, and Clara did a great job with only a little assistance on my part.
Start by gluing a triangle body and a head onto your piece of background paper. With a marker, draw in some legs and long strands for feathers.

At this point, Clara could barely wait to get started! She loved placing green color coding labels onto the feathers!
I think she did a great job!
Dip the eraser end of a pencil in some blue paint, and add dots to the color coding labels — this was Clara’s favorite part!
Emily thought it was great fun too!
So bright and colorful! Have fun!!

We love peacocks over here! They have them at a park by our house. This would be perfect to make!

Dear Valerie,
The peacock bodies look a little bit like the characters from “Spy vs. Spy”.
Love,
Mark

I didn’t think of that, but I can see the resemblance. Good eye!

Oh my goodness these are adorable. Emily LOVES peacocks ever since she saw them open their feathers at our local ecology center. I will have to try this project with her!!

Very beautiful. I think you need to start a new tag for “color-coding labels” crafts – you find so many fantastic uses for them.
August 6th, 2010 on 6:23 pm
GREAT idea!! I’ll create one and add it to the menu — thanks!!

Very cute – and I second Natalie’s tag suggestion

I agree with Natalie!
Great craft. Last summer we were at the Bronx Zoo and a wandering peacock chased Collin. He is still scared to death of peacocks. I wonder if he would like to do this craft. Ha!

LOL That is so funny!! I don’t think he’s the only kid to get chased down by a peacock — they can be a little aggressive sometimes! Sneaky, peacocks!!

This peacock is so cute. I love it.

LOL- haven’t you run out of those mailing labels yet? :0)
August 6th, 2010 on 9:47 pm
They come in packs of 300 — you can make a LOT of pictures with that many labels!! LOL

I was waiting to hear they filled in the feathers with colored pencils or something. I love the idea of the labels as the eyes.
Did you know the eyes are how they determine who is good for mating, but the more eyes they have the shorter a life span they have.
Random useless factoid.
