I sewed up this little color match game for Clara to practice identifying her colors. It ended up being a great quiet game for keeping both of the girls occupied while I was in the kitchen making dinner. It is so colorful!
I sewed the color mat using pieces from fat quarters (very inexpensive), and some batting. I knew this would be too easy for Emily, but she loved the idea of being Clara’s teacher.
They found colorful items from around the house to match with the colors on the mat — some pipe cleaners, toys, large buttons, yarn, and pieces of felt. You could also use paint chips, though we didn’t have any on-hand. In mind was this sensory color match game found on Etsy.
I rollup the color mat, and put it in a mason jar along with all the matching goodies and store the game in the pantry, so it’s easy to find when I get dinner started.
Added bonus — the color mat will look so cheerful as a wall hanging in the girls’ bedroom!
Have fun!!

Very pretty – how neat that Emily is such a dedicated big sister, they seem to be best friends!
August 3rd, 2010 on 12:32 am
Thanks so much, Natalie! They really do get along well, especially considering they are four years apart. Emily loves to teach Clara all sorts of things, and Clara does her best to keep up with her big sister. I love watching them play!

Can you imagine how cute a birthday present this would be?

We must be on the same wavelength… It’s funny you mention that because I made a batch of three of these to give the other two as gifts! You know what they say about great minds…

Nice idea, and even if one doesn’t sew (of course I do, a-hem) this could be done with a painted card stock strip.

Super cute! I love the fabric mat and the way it is stored in the jar is too cute. I think that’s even a cute gift.

What a great idea! I even already have the fabric. I like to put together little things like this for unique gifts- the mason jar adds a nice gifty touch! I’ve added it to my tumblr page

I just bought the fat quarters needed for this today – on sale at JoAnn’s for $0.99. Can’t wait to get started! DD is really into matching colors right now and also likes to “help” me sew.
August 9th, 2010 on 10:47 pm
Made it today while DD napped and she just loves it. Thanks again for the great idea! I don’t know zip about batting so I used a long strip of felt inside instead.

Of course, I always see great ideas like this when my son has out-grown them. I’m making a note though for gifts. Thanks for sharing … I’ve posted a link.

Thank you so much for this wonderful “Brilliant” (bright and beautiful) educational toy. I shall take up your idea, if that is ok, and make one for my little grandson for Christmas.
I shall keep your blog safe …. on my Specials list :0)

This is great! I have all of my fabric washed and ironed and will be starting this project tonight! I bought some fusible interfacing for the middle and then will attach some terry cloth on the back… just to switch it up a bit.
Will see what happens!
I’m brand new to this sewing adventure, so this will be interesting!

What a great idea! I may have to raid my fabric stash to see if I can pull this one off right away. Thanks!

Wonderful Idea… Have you ever thought about taking the same colorful fabric and making more and selling them to others who do not sew and would like to purchase this?
