Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss – Lorax Craft

The month of March brings so many FUN things to celebrate — National Craft Month, March 2nd is Read Across America Day AND it is also Dr. Seuss’s birthday, just to name a few!!!

Emily is a huge fan of Dr. Seuss, and has been waiting a long time to celebrate his birthday. One of our favorite books by Dr. Seuss is The Lorax. We both love the message of hope at the end! After we read the book, she was very excited to put together her own little Truffula forest!

Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss - Lorax Craft

We used things we already had on-hand. She painted some sticks from the yard with yellow stripes, and we tied pieces of felt roving leftover from a previous project to form the tops of the trees. We recycled a plastic lid from a yogurt container as a stand, and Emily placed the sticks inside some play dough to hold them up. Fun!!

I think it made for an interesting center piece for our table! For teachers, it would be fun to have each student make a tree, and then have the class put together a larger forest.

Have fun and be sure to make story time a part of your everyday routine!!

  1. Super fun! And my, I need to brush up on Dr. Seuss or maybe just on sleep – it took me a full five seconds to remember who the Lorax was! Love your Truffula forest =)

  2. Oh, I love Lorax – it’s my favorite book by Dr Seuss. Unfortunately, Anna finds it extremely scary because of Onceler. I think your craft looks great.

    • He is a scary ol’ Once-ler, isn’t he?? But it is one of my faves by Dr. Seuss!

  3. I love the Truffula trees. Very creative. My kids love The Lorax too, maybe we will try this tomorrow.

We made Oobleck which was very fun too: http://www.happybirthdayauthor.com/2011/02/happy-birthday-dr-seuss-march-2.html

  4. Oooohhhh, that looks like a fun way to make those. I remember that book from a third grade project as the coolest book ever, aside from the Sneetches of course.

  5. My daughter’s favorite Dr. Seuss book is The Lorax too!

  9. Hi Valerie –

Ok, this will have to be our *next project. We already have roving and plenty of sticks!

I just posted on our blog about a flower mural inspired by a past post of yours – http://sycamorecorner.blogspot.com/2011/03/welcome-spring.html

Thank you for the creative ideas for fun. Happy Dr. Seuss’ Birthday!

    • Oh, the mural is beautiful!!!! I love how cheery it looks – you must smile every time you see it! 🙂 Thanks so much for posting!! xoxo

      • I love it too, but the kitty cats seem to love it more. It is better than tv to watch them bat it apart, who knew they could be so fascinated by post-its! Thanks again –

  10. Thank you for sharing this! LOVE your ideas! I’m planning on doing this when my daughter gets home from preschool. My son has actually had me read The Lorax the last 3 days, so making Truffula trees will be the perfect way to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday today! 🙂

  11. Oh, CUTE! Last year for Dr. Seuss’s birthday we made star-bellied Sneetch cookies! They were so much fun!

  12. So cute! We celebrated by making healthy green eggs (with spinach) and “ham” (whole wheat toast cut to spell out “h-a-m”). We loved making oobleck too.

  13. Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!! 🙂

I love coming to your blog because each time I do, I am inspired. I listed it as one of my favorite craft blogs in a post I made today. I just thought I’d let you know.

  15. I wanted to let you know that I did this craft with my kiddos today. They loved it. We used stuff we had on hand too. For the tops of the trees we used cotton balls that we colored with chalk. For the trunks we used pipe cleaners with one wrapping around the other. Thanks again for sharing.

  16. this is so cool and easy too! Love it!
