Outdoor Mud Pie Kitchen

This outdoor mud pie kitchen set was simple and easy to set up. It made my almost 3 year old SO happy to create her own mud pie creations over and over again!

Here are a few ideas to make an outdoor mud pie kitchen set of your own:

DIY Outdoor Mud Pie Kitchen Set

I loved making mud pies as a kid! Ah, who am I kidding?? I still do!! This outdoor mud pie kitchen only took a few minutes to set up, but it kept Clara happily busy for hours!! Using a few old crates, some old muffin tins, bowls and spoons, we had an instant outdoor kitchen play area.

We put on our play clothes, and Clara instantly ran over and started to play — I love how something as simple as dirt and water can make her so HAPPY!!

She “baked” several mud pies, and even “cooked” up a big bowl of rock soup. Mmmmm… πŸ™‚

Bringing the easel outdoors seemed to give it new life — several chalk drawings decorated her new kitchen space.

And while she was busy cookin’, I managed to get some gardening done — Hey, if she plays with her dirt, I might as well play with mine, right??

BonΒ appΓ©tit!

  1. I never made mud pies as a child – but the children have been hard at work making them lately, everytime I turn around. They would love this!

  2. What fun! It is hard to make mud pies in the desert but we sure tried. πŸ™‚ You live in a beautiful place.

    • Thanks, Janice! We made them w/ sand last year. Not quite the same, but pretty close! πŸ™‚

  3. Dear Valerie,

After having this soup, I feel like I need to visit the dentist.

    Love,
    Mark

    • You should try the grass salad. It has all the fiber you could possibly need…. πŸ˜‰

  4. I need to do this!! Suck up the mess and embrace the dirt and water!

  5. What a demure young lady Clara is! Our mud pie kitchen etiquette is nowhere near this civilized. My guys need a hosepipe rather than a napkin when they are done!

    • This is what I was thinking! Our boys played in the mud last week and I literally bathed them outside because they were WAAAAY too muddy to even think about coming inside.

    • She must get that from Mark!

  6. What a fun way to spend the day!

  7. Great kitchen set up! I have a page on my blog devoted to outdoor fun like this :). I’m linking you up!

    • Thanks so much for linking, Amy!! I saw the page and there are so many great ideas on there! πŸ™‚

  8. I love the crates! I want some crates like that…… Hmmmmm….. Where could I find those? My kids make soup all the time. It’s mud soup with a touch of stones, grass, and what have you……

    • Hmmm… try the thrift store? or maybe an antique shop?? They come in handy for all sorts of things!

  9. Beautiful! I took an even simpler approach recently when I took a previously unused plastic indoor kitchen outside. I added some unused kitchen goodies, water, spray bottles & dirt and voila. The kids now LOVE it! (Me, too!)

  10. That’s too cute. Love your set-up!

  11. It’s definitely time for mud pies here too, but your set up is very fancy πŸ™‚ I love those times where daughter just happily plays with her things and lets me attend to other tasks.

  12. Awesomeness =)

  13. I have had something like this in mind for a while… love love love it! I’ll be linking (eventually, sigh.) xoxo

  14. It’s so cute! I love our outdoor mud kitchen, more than my daughter, unfortunately πŸ™‚

  15. Hey Val!!!! Omgoodness, she is getting so big. She’s beautiful! I just dropped in to send a friend to your chewy granola bar recipe and spent the next half hour catching up. You are such an amazing incredible mom! Missing chatting with you. Have a fantastic week!

    Blessings,

    Val

    • Awwwww… so sweet of you, thanks so much!! We’ll have to get caught up again soon — hope all is well with you and your amazing family! xoxo πŸ™‚

  17. My kids love to play in the dirt. This would be a big hit here. I have so much catching up to do on blog reading – I missed your posts while I was away!

  18. I have to admit…we are mudpie lovers..we would rather cook and eat mud than regular food! =) love this!!!
    Have a great day!

  19. What beautiful pictures! How fun!

  20. I have to tell you that we made our own mud kitchen last night–though not as snazzy as yours. My son thought it was a big hit, and was telling his grandma all about it today. Thanks again for your inspiration!
