Have you heard of Target’s Read with Me program? This brilliant initiative is designed to help youngsters become proficient at reading by the end of third grade — an important milestone when kids transition from learning to read, to reading to learn. As part of the Read with Me initiave, Target has generously pledged to donate more than $500 million by the end of 2015, bringing the grand total to more than $1 billion donated!

The most important thing you can do to help, is to commit to a regular schedule of reading to (or with) your child. The good news is, committing to a reading schedule is easy and fun!! We visit our local library at least once a week to gather all sorts of interesting books, and set aside time for reading every day — our girls love it!

This sweepstakes is only open to U.S. residents 18 years or older. A winning commenter will be drawn at random, using Random.org, after the sweepstakes closes on Thursday, Jan. 20 at 12:00am EST. The winner will receive a 16GB Wi-Fi enabled iPad and a selection of children’s books, a prize package valued up to $599. After the winner is notified, he or she has 48 hours to respond with their mailing address, phone number and ages of their children, so that Target can ship the prize and select books appropriate for their children. If the winner does not reply in that time frame, he or she forfeits the prize and another winner will be drawn at random. Please note that we cannot ship product to a P.O. Box.

    I love reading “Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree” to my girls. It is also a favorite book to read to my classroom students. The pictures are so supportive of the fabulous story; and the message about sharing is very good.

  15. A favorite book of ours was always “James in the House of Aunt Prudence.” It’s an AMAZING book – very underrated. Few words, but the illustrations are outstanding. You can pore over them for the LONGEST time, inspiring terrific dialogues with your kids.

  17. My grand-daughter is so into “Magic Ballerina” right now.. but I can’t get them here in the states..had to order them from the UK.. now that was expensive! We have library visit time every Tuesday after school. Makes that day special for all of us.

  47. My mom passed on her huge respect for good story-telling and for learning. The American Girl books were just being published when I was a kid, and the lessons in history and culture were invaluable. My young cousin is now a fan, and I love to read with her and see her inspired like I was!

    I love to read to the grandkids and other than Dr. Seuss and Mother Goose (all time favorites), their choice of books varies from day to day. Right now my grandson only wants books dealing with trains, and the granddaughter only ballerinas. Tomorrow things may change.

  63. When my children were younger, they loved all the books in the Beatrix Potter Series such as the Tale of two Bad Mice, and the Tale of Jemima Puddle Duck.

  75. My favorite childrens book was and still is called “Mister Dog, The Dog Who Owned Himself,”written by Margaret Wise Brown.
    I read it to my granddaughters when I go to visit them and it is usually when we all snuggle together to have storytime before they go to sleep. They’ve grown to love the book as much as I do.

  80. I love listening to my wife read Skippy John Jones books to our girls at bedtime. Her accent and funny sound effects make it a really fun time.
